Providing safe blood products to southeast Nebraska and beyond.

In the first half of the 20th century, scientists and physicians made rapid advances in the mass collection and storage of blood. During this time, hospitals collected just enough blood to serve their own needs—for surgeries, emergencies, and medical treatments.

As modern medicine continued to advance and the demand for blood rose nationwide, so did the need for a community-based organization to collect, store, and distribute blood products in southeast Nebraska.

The Lancaster County Medical Society responded to this need by forming the Community Blood Bank (CBB) on October 14, 1968.

In the last decade, as the need for blood supplies has continued to increase, CBB has responded by expanding its own capabilities. Over the years, CBB has grown from one collection site and two staff members to four collection sites and a staff of more than 90, in addition to a mobile program that conducts over 200 blood drives each year.

The Community Blood Bank provides the community's donated blood in Lincoln and several surrounding communities, including the following:

  • Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Health Center
  • BryanLGH Medical Center East and West
  • Dialysis Center of Lincoln
  • Henderson Health Care Services, Inc.
  • Jefferson Community Health Center
  • Lincoln Surgical Hospital
  • Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital
  • Memorial Hospital in Seward
  • Nebraska Surgery Center
  • Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center
  • Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend

While methods and testing have dramatically changed over the years—and continue to change today—CBB's mission remains the same: To provide quality blood products and other related services to donors, patients, physicians and hospitals.
