Community Blood Bank Becomes Nebraska Community Blood Bank

After 40 years of Connecting People ~ Saving Lives, the Community Blood Bank is expanding its name to truly reflect the patients served. In 1968, when the Lancaster County Medical Society founded the nonprofit organization, the focus was solely on serving Lincoln hospitals. Since that time, the Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) has grown to serve 12 hospitals as well as patients from 82 of Nebraska’s 93 counties.

“The name evolved as the focus has expanded,” stated Phyllis Ericson, CEO. Forty years ago when the Nebraska Community Blood Bank was established, the number of specialty care procedures was limited to open heart surgery. In 40 years, Lincoln’s healthcare services have expanded to include a regional burn unit, two neo-natal programs, a Level II trauma center and cancer treatment programs.

“We are introducing our updated name during January, National Blood Donor Month. This is a time when we say ‘thank you’ to blood donors who share the gift of life,” added Ericson. “Nebraska Community Blood Bank blood donors help patients in their communities and across Nebraska and the nation.”

The Nebraska Community Blood Bank is licensed by the Food and Drug Administration, accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks and is a member of America’s Blood Centers in the U.S. and Canada. For more information visit www.don8bld.org.
